Australian surfer Jack Robinson made a strong showing at this year's Olympic competition, advancing into the last 16 stage with impressive performance in French Polynesia waters. Unfortunately, Molly Picklum did not fare as well and was eliminated in her heat during Teahupo’o round two.
Robinson faced off against Peru's Lucca Mesines in his second-round match, where he managed to secure the top single wave score of this year's Olympics with a 9.87 ride. He then went on to finish with an impressive 16.87 total, outpacing Mesines and winning their duel. Alongside fellow Australians Ethan Ewing and world champion Tyler Wright, Robinson proceeds to round three.
In contrast, Picklum struggled in the unpredictable conditions of French Polynesia waters. Johanne Defay, ranked sixth by the World Surf League, beat the fourth-ranked Picklum 11.83 to 7.43 points during their clash. Defay's performance included a challenging ride into shallow water that resulted in an impressive score of 5.83 for her round.
With unpredictable weather potentially affecting the schedule, Tuesday is expected to host the round of 16, while Wednesday could see the final eight compete in knockout ties leading up to the medal rounds. Australia's Ethan Ewing and Tyler Wright advanced directly from their first-round matches, with details about their second-round opponents to be announced after Tuesday's events.
