Jannik Sinner advances towards potential face-off with Alcaraz following triumph at Shelton event

Jannik Sinner's remarkable year since his Wimbledon semi-final loss, marked by six ATP titles, aiding Italy in the Davis Cup, winning his first major championship, and climbing to world No. 1, appears rooted in his refined serve and subsequent surge of confidence.

Saturday saw Sinner advance through the draw with an impressive 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (9) victory over Ben Shelton after two hours and eight minutes. However, it was Sinner's exceptional return game that dominated most of the match until a late comeback from Shelton fell short.

Sinner excelled under No. 1 Court's roof during heavy rainfall affecting other courts, displaying remarkable prowess against Shelton throughout their first set before overcoming adversity in the third to secure a spot in the quarter-finals for a consecutive year and setting up a potential semi-final showdown with Carlos Alcaraz.

Reflecting on the match, Sinner expressed satisfaction despite its intensity, particularly the last set, highlighting the challenges of such contests: "These matches can stretch out quite long." He is scheduled to face either Daniil Medvedev or Grigor Dimitrov in his next challenge.

Despite a relatively small number of American players reaching this stage at Wimbledon, Shelton's performance has garnered attention due to the unexpected success he displayed at the US Open semi-finals. However, Sinner's commanding play throughout the match left little room for his opponent.

Sinner began the match with a powerful start, breaking twice and playing efficiently during a 29-minute first set, while managing to hit nine winners and committing only four errors. Nonetheless, it was Sinner's ability to handle Shelton's left-handed serve that kept him from gaining momentum on his own service games throughout the match.

Although Shelton remained in contention after losing the first set, facing an elevated challenge compared to previous opponents like Mattia Bellucci, Lloyd Harris or Denis Shapovalov proved demanding for his skills. Despite making a break chance early in the second set and winning it off-court, Sinner ultimately won that set as well.

Shelton's resilience shone through during the third set when he broke back after overcoming a tense tiebreaker with Sinner. However, an increase in errors marked the end of Shelton's journey in this match, culminating in his defeat by Sinner's consistent performance.
