Ryan Moore could be sidelined for the remainder of the Flat season due to a stress fracture in his femur. Moore was scheduled to ride at the Curragh on Saturday but was withdrawn from all his engagements by midday.
Moore is the primary jockey for Aidan O’Brien’s strong Ballydoyle stable, leaving the team without one of the sport’s top riders during a crucial stretch of the season, with numerous major races approaching.
O’Brien commented: “Ryan is managing, but he’s had significant discomfort in his right leg since Irish Derby weekend. They tried various treatments, but nothing worked, so he underwent scans and an X-ray yesterday, revealing the fracture.
“Since the Irish Derby, he’s been pushing through the pain. When they identified the fracture, it explained everything. The only solution now is rest.”
When asked if Moore might return this season, O’Brien responded: “It’s unlikely. We have other capable riders available, so the team will manage.”
He added: “Ryan frequently runs, which may have contributed to the initial issue. Then, in Germany, when the filly [Garden Of Eden in Düsseldorf] suddenly turned, he landed awkwardly, possibly worsening the injury.
“They treated him for various issues—his knee, heel, and possible ligament damage—before yesterday’s scans confirmed the femur fracture.
“Remarkably, he’s been riding for nearly two months with this injury. He’s incredibly tough. With time, he’ll recover and return.”
