Jonathan Milan Secures Second Stage Win in Challenging Tour de France Sprint
Italy’s Jonathan Milan earned his second stage victory in this year’s Tour de France after a chaotic sprint finish in the 17th stage on Wednesday.
The final stretch was marred by a major crash just one kilometer from the finish in Valence, where wet roads caused multiple riders to fall. The incident disrupted the peloton, leaving only ten cyclists to contest the sprint. Biniam Girmay was among those involved and received medical attention afterward.
Tadej Pogacar finished safely to maintain his lead in the general classification. Earlier in the stage, France’s Quentin Pacher and Mathieu Burgaudeau, along with Norway’s Jonas Abrahamsen and Italy’s Vincenzo Albanese, attempted a breakaway but were eventually overtaken by the sprinters’ teams.
Abrahamsen made a final solo effort with 11 kilometers remaining but was caught just 4.3 kilometers from the line. In the shortened sprint, Milan outpaced Belgium’s Jordi Meeus and Denmark’s Tobias Lund Andresen, who finished second and third, respectively.
The race continues on Thursday with the 18th stage, a demanding mountain leg from Vif to the Col de la Loze, known as one of the toughest climbs in the Tour.
