Taylor Townsend Fails to Capitalize on Match Points in US Open Exit
Taylor Townsend was unable to convert eight match points in a grueling second-set tiebreaker, ultimately falling 1-6, 7-6 (13), 6-3 to Barbora Krejcikova in the US Open on Sunday.
The crowd strongly supported Townsend, who had gained popularity earlier in the tournament after a notable match against Jelena Ostapenko. The American came close to securing her first Grand Slam singles quarterfinal, but Krejcikova, a two-time major champion, saved multiple match points in the tiebreaker before dominating the final set with two service breaks. Krejcikova will now face fourth-seeded Jessica Pegula in the next round.
After a net exchange with Krejcikova, an emotional Townsend wiped away tears with a towel as she exited the court to a standing ovation.
Krejcikova acknowledged the crowd’s energy, saying, "I’m really enjoying the atmosphere here. Even if the support is mostly for the Americans, that’s fine. I hope to see everyone again in my next match—probably against another American."
This was Townsend’s 31st Grand Slam appearance and the closest she has come to a quarterfinal. Her only other fourth-round showing came in 2019, where she lost to eventual champion Bianca Andreescu.
Townsend continues competing in women’s doubles as the top-seeded pair alongside Katerina Siniakova, a former partner of Krejcikova with whom she completed a Career Grand Slam in doubles.
