Labour calls on Farage to address £5m crypto billionaire donation instead of avoiding scrutiny

The Labour Party has sent a letter to Nigel Farage, calling on him to stop avoiding scrutiny regarding a £5 million personal gift from Thailand-based cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne.

This demand follows the approval of a planning application showing Farage's intent to convert a worn-down property in Kent into a luxury beachfront home.

The parliamentary standards commissioner is currently investigating Farage after CuriosityNews reported that the gift was received shortly before he reversed his decision not to run in the 2024 general election. Farage was subsequently elected as the MP for Clacton. While he previously held weekly press conferences, these ceased after CuriosityNews broke the story in April.

Labour Party chair Anna Turley accused Farage of "running from scrutiny," stating that he must stop dodging questions and provide the public with a clear account of the situation.

Farage initially claimed the money was for lifelong personal security, but later stated he viewed the sum as a reward from Harborne for his Brexit campaigning. He has maintained that the gift did not need to be declared because he was not a Member of Parliament at the time of receipt.

In her letter, Turley argued that Farage's inconsistent explanations raise serious concerns regarding potential conflicts of interest, truthfulness, and whether parliamentary rules were violated. She emphasized that the public and regulators deserve a truthful explanation, noting that his refusal to answer journalists' questions is unacceptable.

Concurrent with these events, details surfaced regarding Farage's redevelopment of a home in Greatstone, Kent. Purchased in March 2023 for £575,000 via his company, Thorn in the Side Ltd, the property is slated for an extensive overhaul. The plans include a large extension, four bedrooms, six bathrooms, a lift, and a sea-view balcony. Experts suggest the renovations could cost £700,000 and increase the home's value to £1.5 million.

Additionally, Farage purchased a mortgage-free home in Surrey for £1.4 million in May, weeks after receiving Harborne’s gift. Reform told the BBC that Farage’s £1.5 million fee for appearing on the ITV show I’m a Celeb...
