LeBron James is poised to become the first player in NBA history to compete in 23 seasons when he rejoins the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2025-26 campaign.
The league’s all-time leading scorer has opted into his $52.6 million contract for the next season, according to Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, who confirmed the decision to ESPN on Sunday. It remains uncertain whether James, who will turn 41 this December, plans to continue playing beyond the upcoming year.
“LeBron’s focus is on contending for a title,” Paul stated. “He recognizes the Lakers’ long-term strategy but also prioritizes having a genuine opportunity to win. Our collaboration with the Lakers over the past eight years has been meaningful, and the franchise remains a significant part of his journey.”
Paul added, “Balancing immediate success with future planning is challenging. We are assessing what aligns best with LeBron’s current priorities. He intends to maximize every remaining season, and the Lakers are fully supportive of that approach.”
James has appeared in 1,562 regular-season games, just 50 shy of surpassing Robert Parish’s all-time NBA record.
During the 2024-25 season, he averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists in 70 games, placing him among the top 22 players in each category. A 21-time All-Star, four-time MVP, and four-time champion, James began his NBA career in 2003 when the Cleveland Cavaliers selected him first overall as an 18-year-old prospect.
