Thousands gathered in London for Pride on Saturday, but prominent LGBTQIA+ figures at the event expressed concern over increasing negative portrayals of transgender individuals.
Singer and actor Olly Alexander and writer Shon Faye were among those who raised concerns about a recent UK legal decision regarding the definition of a woman during the city’s annual LGBTQI+ celebration.
Alexander, who represented the UK in the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest, said: “Trans individuals currently need solidarity more than ever. They are facing widespread criticism and unjust representations. They are no different from anyone else—they deserve equal respect, rights, and opportunities. That’s why this year’s Pride is crucial.”
Earlier this year, the UK’s highest court ruled that certain terms in equality legislation pertain only to biological sex.
Before the march, Faye, author of well-known works on gender issues, stated that recent years have seen significant challenges to LGBTQ+ rights globally.
She noted: “The trans community in the UK has faced heightened media hostility and the erosion of legal protections. Pride this year is about reclaiming visibility and resisting intimidation—demonstrating that we won’t be silenced.”
Following the march, US singer Chaka Khan performed at a concert in Trafalgar Square. Around 500 groups participated in the event, moving from Hyde Park Corner through Piccadilly Circus to Whitehall Place.
