Lando Norris Trails Teammate by Nine Points Ahead of Dutch Grand Prix Qualifying
Lando Norris heads into qualifying at Zandvoort just nine points behind McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri in the championship standings, following strong showings in all practice sessions for the Dutch Grand Prix.
Piastri was only slightly slower than Norris, but both McLarens outpaced George Russell’s Mercedes by a notable margin in the final practice. The time difference between the two McLarens was comparable to the gap between Russell and Esteban Ocon’s Haas, which finished 18th.
Norris acknowledged that the closing stages of the season will be challenging. He emphasized the need to minimize mistakes that have cost him valuable points. With such narrow margins between the McLaren drivers, the championship could hinge on who maintains the cleanest performance.
Reflecting on past decisions, Norris admitted room for improvement but took a pragmatic approach. “Could I have made better choices at times? Probably,” he said. “I don’t regret them, but I’d do things differently if I could. That’s how you learn.”
Elsewhere, Carlos Sainz in the Williams displayed strong pace in final practice, as did Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Lewis Hamilton, in the second Ferrari, lagged 0.435 seconds behind his teammate despite appearing closely matched on Friday.
After a difficult Hungarian Grand Prix, Hamilton arrived in the Netherlands with renewed focus, stating he was “concentrating on the job I love.”
While a McLaren one-two appears likely, the remaining grid positions remain highly contested.
