1. A Light Reference to Brexit
Nearly a decade after the Brexit referendum, subtle remarks about its consequences have become more acceptable. The French president noted that while the UK is no longer part of the EU, it “cannot remain isolated because defence, security, economic strength, and democratic values—the foundations of our identity—are interconnected across Europe.”
He also suggested strengthening ties through initiatives like youth exchange programs, stating: “There is a danger that our societies drift apart, leaving younger generations unfamiliar with one another. At a time when global developments constantly remind us of our shared future, we must act.”
2. Migration and Asylum Policies
This is among the key topics Keir Starmer aims to discuss as the political segment of his visit begins, particularly seeking updates on France’s efforts to prevent small boat crossings.
“In an uncertain world, the desire for a better life elsewhere is understandable. Yet we cannot tolerate the violation of our immigration laws or the exploitation of vulnerable individuals by criminal networks,” Macron said. “France and the UK have a joint duty to manage migration with compassion, fairness, and mutual responsibility.”
3. Ukraine and European Security
During the visit, Macron and Starmer will participate in discussions with a group of nations committed to supporting Ukraine’s security, even in the event of a ceasefire.
“We reject the idea that force dictates legitimacy,” Macron stated. “That is why, alongside the UK, we established this coalition—a clear affirmation that Europe will stand with Ukraine without hesitation.”
He also emphasized the UK’s and France’s key roles in European security as the continent’s only nuclear-armed nations and leading military powers.
4. Reducing Dependence on Global Powers
Macron urged European nations to reduce their “over-reliance on both the US and China,” criticizing China’s economic policies and past US trade approaches under Donald Trump.
“We support an open global system,” he said. “Cooperation is essential, but not at the cost of independence.”
5. The Situation in Gaza
Macron described the crisis in Gaza as “a pressing humanitarian emergency,” calling for an end to what he termed “a prolonged conflict lacking clear direction.”
“A political resolution is vital,” he added. “I remain convinced that a two-state solution is the path to lasting regional stability, ensuring security for Israel and its neighbours.”
