Canada Displays World Cup Strength in Dominant Win Over Wales
Canada delivered a commanding performance that further solidified their Rugby World Cup ambitions, leaving Wales on the verge of elimination from the competition.
Kévin Rouet’s squad had been predicted to top Group B with relative ease, but even by those standards, their display was outstanding. They overwhelmed a Welsh side whose chances of advancing had already diminished after a heavy loss to Scotland the previous week.
Following that defeat, Sean Lynn had criticized his team, and they were outplayed once again against a Canadian side that appears capable of a deep tournament run after two strong matches. After weathering early Welsh pressure, Canada built a 28-0 lead by halftime, securing a bonus point with four well-executed tries.
Two more tries after the break sealed a convincing win, meaning Scotland’s upcoming match against Fiji would confirm the Group B outcome. With Canada and Scotland set to face off for first place next weekend, Wales will only have pride to play for in their meeting with Fiji.
Wales started strongly but failed to capitalize on their early opportunities, and Canada quickly turned the momentum with a relentless attack. Their first real chance resulted in prop McKinley Hunt scoring the opening try, followed five minutes later by winger Alysha Corrigan finishing a fluid team move.
Hunt powered through for Canada’s third try, and moments later, Asia Hogan-Rochester exploited weak Welsh defense to stretch the lead. With captain Sophie de Goede converting all four tries, Canada took full control.
The first score after halftime was pivotal. Had Wales struck first, the match might have tightened, but Canada maintained their momentum. Wales suffered another setback when Georgia Kelly was penalized for a high tackle, leading to Taylor Perry’s fifth try just two minutes later.
Prop Brittany Kassil added a sixth try three minutes after that, effectively ending any Welsh resistance. Though they held firm in the final quarter and avoided further damage, their hopes of progressing were already extinguished.
