At least 60 individuals have been reported deceased following recent aerial assaults across Gaza's territory, as per health officials citing figures from an incident involving a school providing refuge to displaced civilians and another targeted zone designated for humanitarran purposes by Israeli authorities. The ongoing ceasefire deliberations in the conflict that has spanned nearly ten months were again at a standstill with these attacks.
The Red Crescent reported 17 casualties near an area known as Mawasi, situated along the Mediterranean coast and housing hundreds of thousands displaced individuals within a zone marked for evacuation by Israel. An additional count of 16 fatalities was documented at another strike targeting UN-operated al-Awda school in Nuseirat's central refugee camp, according to medics from the adjacent hospital facility.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) asserted that Hamas fighters were present within the attacked school premises, while no immediate comments on the Mawasi bombing occurred but acknowledged around 40 targets in Gaza being targeted by airstrikes earlier in Tuesday. These included various military positions and suspected explosive-laden structures.
The armed factions of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, allies to Hamas, have claimed their combatants launched attacks against Israeli forces across several locations using anti-tank rockets and mortars. No reports on damage or injuries followed an alleged strike at Sderot in southern Israel by the Islamic Jihad faction.
In recent weeks, Israel has executed aggressive aerial operations within Gaza's territory, with some of the most intense being reported over the past two weeks. The deadliest operation targeted Mohammed Deif, allegedly a senior figure in Hamas during an attack on Mawasi that resulted in more than 90 fatalities and no immediate response from Hamas regarding these claims.
The IDF issued a statement indicating approximately half of the Hamas leadership had been neutralized within Gaza since hostilities began following Israel's deadly strike against a Palestininate militant group on October 7th, which resulted in over 1,200 deaths and another 250 abductions. More than 38,400 lives have reportedly been lost throughout the conflict according to Hamas-administered health services while the population of approximately 2.3 million people struggles for necessities such as food, water, medical supplies, and shelter.
Hamas did not immediately respond to comments made by Israel regarding Deif's status. However, should they confirm his death, it would represent a significant morale boost for Israeli forces, who in the course of almost 10 months have thus far been unable to eliminate any top figures within Hamas leadership based on their presence in Gaza.
The attack on Deif and subsequent offensives against Gaza are thought to be factors that contributed to a halt in ceasefire talks being held concurrently in Qatar, which focuses on a humanitarian aid corridor. Disagreements over the identities and numbers of abducted individuals have consistently impeded peace negotiations. The current situation has been further complicated by Israel's control of border crossings with Egypt since May, an issue that Hamas and international delegates demand to be returned for Palestinian governance.
In addition to the ceasefire discussions, the United States announced new sanctions on three Israeli figures associated with settler groups in the occupied West Bank as well as a pro-settlement organization named Regavim, founded by Israel's present finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich. The move reflects wider international measures against extremist factions within the country.
