The vibrant sails of the Moulin Rouge, the famed Parisian cabaret, have started spinning once more, marking the revival of its iconic landmark over a year after they fell unexpectedly.
As part of the celebration, performers from the venue’s troupe of 90 dancers showcased the classic can-can outside the establishment late Thursday evening, following one of its regular performances, which attract hundreds of thousands annually.
Last April, the 12-meter sails came down due to a mechanical issue. Though no one was hurt, the incident stirred strong reactions, including from Paris’s mayor, who recognized the cabaret as an essential piece of the city’s cultural identity.
“These sails have always been a symbol, so returning them to their rightful place was necessary—not just for Paris, but for all who cherish this landmark,” said the cabaret’s director. The sails will now turn daily from late afternoon until the early hours.
“The entire troupe is thrilled to see the sails back—they represent the spirit of Paris,” shared Cyrielle, one of the dancers who participated in the outdoor celebration, which featured a brief fireworks display.
Established in 1889, the Moulin Rouge grew into an emblem of Parisian nightlife, inspiring artists like Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. A well-known film from 2001 further solidified its modern reputation.
The can-can is thought to have originated from a couples’ dance called the quadrille. It initially shocked audiences when introduced in cabarets due to its bold, high-energy choreography.
Developed in the 1920s by the venue’s then-artistic director, the dance involves a row of performers executing lively skirt movements, high kicks, and acrobatic steps.
