At least 28 lives were lost in an Israeli strike on what used to be a school but now serves as shelter within the Jabaliya area of Gaza City, amid claims that Israel may aim to forcibly remove remaining residents during its renewed military effort.
The assault on Abu Hussein institution in Jabaliya resulted Thursday in 28 deaths, including medical professionals and numerous minors, as per health authorities; the actual number of casualties is expected to rise. Moreover, at least eleven lives were extinguished due to two distinct airstrikes within Gaza City—the extent remains unknown for other strikes in central and southern regions.
The assault on Jabaliya school also sparked flames; “There isn't any water available to quench the fire, there is nothing left,” said health worker Medhat Abbas.
“Civilians and children are enduring fatalities under conflagration.”
Israeli forces assert that their actions targeted fighters from Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad using this school as a base, stating around 40 militants were present during the strike. However, representatives of Hamas contest these claims, denying any use of the institution for combat purposes.
Thursday's attacks mark two weeks into Israel’s latest operation in Jabaliya, an enclave within Gaza City—the nation has held sway over this area since year-start despite intermittent confrontations with Hamas necessitating periodic engagement even where it controls the ground.
On Wednesday, after a warning from US hinting at cuts in military backing unless humanitarian aid could reach Gaza—after Israel had denied access to supplies for days since starting operations this month — they permitted 50 vehicles carrying foodstuffs and medical resources into northern Gaza. Israel has issued evacuation warnings for the entirety of northern Gaza so far but notably hasn’t permitted anyone from what's becoming known as Netzarim corridor, bisecting the area under control—those remaining in this sector are mostly individuals with disabilities or elderly citizens and their families. They argue it is too perilous to evacuate due to ongoing violence; they fear that departure could result in similar fates as those who abandoned during initial conflict stages, according them: “We have penned our final wills here,” shared a local via chat application today.
“The Israel regime exact punishment for not vacating homes early in warfare and now we won’t retreat either; they demolish structures & roads while starving us but even death can't diminish our dignity.” The father of four, who asked to remain anonymous due to fears of Israeli reprisal.
Israeli-Palestinian advocacy groups — B’Tselem, Gisha, Yesh Din and Physicians for Human Rights among them – have implored the international community today not let Israel execute their “generals' strategy”, described as a "starve or surrender" tactic against Gaza City that could amount to war crimes. The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) refutes these allegations, stating they haven’t received such directives.
The head of the UN human rights division has alerted Israel today about potential violation: “Any large-scale forced displacement” of civilians from conflict stricken north Gaza could be a war crime if not grounded in compelling military reasons,” Volker Türk cautioned this morning.
