Rafael Nadal intensified his preparations for the Paris Olympics, triumphing over Mariano Navone after a lengthy match that lasted four hours and secured his spot in the Nordea Open semi-finals.
The 22-time grand slam champion has been without recent accolades since his victory at the French Open in 2022 due to numerous injuries which led him to miss most of the previous season. Currently, he is just two wins away from advancing as Navone was defeated with scores of 6-7 (2), 7-5, and 7-5 during a challenging match at Bastad in Sweden.
This encounter posed Nadal's toughest test to date since his return to the professional circuit last April, where he overcame a significant setback by reclaiming a lead of five games before ultimately securing victory and setting up an upcoming semi-final with Croatian player Duje Ajdukovic.
Following his recent returns after withdrawals from both the French Open and Wimbledon, Nadal has been diligentic in his efforts to regain top form. With a record of 14 titles at Roland Garros under his belt, Nadal is preparing for an appearance at the Olympics with aspirations of adding another gold medal to his collection.
Throughout this tournament, Nadal has been victorious in straight sets against notable opponents such as Leo Borg and Cameron Norrie before aiming for Olympic success once again. Earlier reports suggested Holger Rune's participation might be jeopardized due to knee issues, but his status remains uncertain after a retirement announcement on social media.
Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev has advanced into the semi-finals with a straight-set win against Zhang Zhizhen and will face Pedro Martínez in their upcoming clash. In another match, Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Fabio Fognini to advance as well, while Matteo Berrettini overcame Félix Auger-Aliassime with a pair of tie-breaks during his ongoing comeback from injury setbacks.
