Nobel Peace Prize Announcement Awaited
The winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize will be revealed shortly in Oslo, with the announcement expected within the hour.
Predicting the laureate is difficult—the selection process is confidential, and the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s decisions are often unpredictable. In the past, the prize has been used to recognize human rights advocates and criticize repressive governments.
Amid ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as concerns over global instability, this year’s choice may reflect broader criticism of international leadership failures.
Last year’s prize went to Nihon Hidankyo, a group representing survivors of the atomic bombings in Japan. This year, the committee has 338 nominees—244 individuals and 94 organizations—to consider.
Previous recipients range from political figures like Jimmy Carter, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Nelson Mandela to organizations such as the European Union and the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.
Some in Norway have expressed concern about potential diplomatic fallout if former U.S. President Donald Trump is not selected, given the committee’s recent statement confirming a decision had been made before a recent ceasefire agreement in Gaza. Observers believe it is unlikely Trump will receive the award, raising questions about his reaction if he is excluded.
