Novak Djokovic advanced another step toward his potential record 25th Grand Slam singles title and a unique US Open repeat when fellow Serb Laslo Djere was forced to retire due to injury during the third set of their second-round match on Wednesday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Just three days after overcoming similar odds against this same opponent, Novak continued his streak as lightning showed no signs of striking twice while a sudden thunderstorm interrupted play across the venue. Donning an armband for protection around his recently repaired right knee surgical wound, he maintained control with scores of 6-4, 6-4, leading after one hour into what would be two sets and beyond.
The action proceeded at a methodic speed as both competitors traded rallies until Laslo Djere's efforts appeared to result in injury for him while ahead by score: Novak led with the scores of Love all (2-0). When he broke back early on during their second set, there was an air that this night could extend into a long evening.
Nevertheless, it took its physical demands upon Laslo Djere to his limits as both players maintained fierce competition until Novak managed further breaks when the other faltered with crucial shots. With score at Love (1-0), and showing signs of distress due an injury in lower abdomen after leading 4-2, he conceded defeat early during set three: "It’s not what we want," said Djokovic.
Novak then faced another battle as a medical timeout was called on him with the score at Love (1-0). He continued to demonstrate resilience by defeating opponents including Italy's Taylor Fritz and France Clara Burel, who were eliminated early in their respective matches that evening: "I think she’s solid from back," said Novak about his next challenge.
Lastly on the night was American teenager Leah Beth Williams securing a first Grand Slam victory as well with scores of 6-1, 7-6 (1) against Italy's Matteo Berrettini; while two-time major champion Victoria Azarenka triumphed over France’s Clara Burel by the score Love all.
Novak would continue his relentless pursuit towards another US Open repeat and potential record, with a third round awaiting him against Argentina's Francisco Comesana after defeating Laslo Djere who had to retire due to injury in their second-round match at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday night.
