New York Mayor Criticizes Immigration Raids Targeting Undocumented Individuals
The mayor of New York City has stated that the city had no role in recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Chinatown, which were reportedly linked to the sale of counterfeit goods.
Mayor Eric Adams amplified a statement from the New York Police Department (NYPD), which clarified that it was not involved in the federal operation conducted on Canal Street.
Adams reaffirmed the city’s position, writing:
New York City does not collaborate with federal authorities on civil deportations, in line with local laws. While we seek further details, residents should know we were not part of this operation. Our administration maintains that undocumented individuals striving to build a life here should not face enforcement actions, and efforts should instead focus on addressing violent crime.
The raids sparked protests in New York City on Tuesday evening, as demonstrators gathered near the 26 Federal Plaza Immigration Building, where detainees were believed to be held. Protesters chanted slogans such as “ICE out of New York” and “No ICE, no KKK, no fascist USA.”
Videos of the operation showed armed, masked federal agents restraining a man with zip ties and pushing back bystanders. Crowds trailed the agents through the streets as an armored vehicle moved through the area.
One woman was heard yelling at agents, “Is this worth the paycheck? Selling your soul?”
The raid, which witnesses said included over 50 federal agents, occurred in a Manhattan area known for the widespread sale of counterfeit goods, including handbags, accessories, and jewelry. The exact number of detentions remains unclear, though one witness reported seeing at least seven individuals arrested.
