The R&A is exploring the possibility of moving the third round of the Open Championship to an earlier start time this month to reduce potential disruptions caused by a scheduled loyalist parade in Portrush. If the tournament follows its usual schedule, thousands of spectators leaving the sold-out Royal Portrush would coincide with the start of a march involving over 60 bands and 2,000 participants.
Organizers have long been mindful of the logistical complications arising from these overlapping events on Saturday. A key concern is the risk of heavy congestion as fans exit the course—or choose to leave early to avoid delays.
Previous reports indicated that the Portrush Sons of Ulster, the group behind the parade, declined a request from the R&A to reschedule. Typically, the third round concludes at 8pm BST, while the parade is set to begin at 8.15pm.
While the R&A has not provided specifics, adjustments to tee times are expected. A statement from the organization said: “We are taking steps to limit inconvenience for spectators leaving the championship due to the event in Portrush.”
The extent of the scheduling changes remains uncertain, as live television coverage in the U.S. imposes certain constraints. Any shift in timing is likely to be minor but still significant.
Officials had earlier pledged to “consider possible measures to help fans depart smoothly after play.” Tickets for the third round are priced at over £120 for adults. The Open, taking place from 17 to 20 July, will be the largest sporting event in Northern Ireland this year.
In other news, ahead of the Scottish Open, Xander Schauffele expressed support for Keegan Bradley’s effort to become a playing captain for the U.S. Ryder Cup team in September.
