Since Paris was chosen as the host city in 2017, ensuring safety has consistently remained a top concern during the planning process for the upcoming Olympic Games. Organisers aim not only to provide security but also to make the event feel like an inclusive celebration of sport and culture.
The Paris Olympics opening ceremony is set to be held along the Seine River, with temporary seating arranged nearby. An estimated 300,000 spectators are expected to partake in this historic occasion.
Tony Estanguet, head of the organising committee for Paris 2024, emphasised their commitment to safety during a recent interview. He cited the Olympic torch relay as an example, with half a million participants successfully completing it without incident last year. The same level of security and public enthusiasm is expected for this year's event.
"Every moment - from the opening ceremony to all the competitions leading up to and following it - has been planned meticulously to ensure safety for accredited individuals and spectators alike," Estanguet stated. "Our focus on security has always been paramount, but we also aim to create an environment that celebrates our city's rich history and vibrant culture."
One of the primary measures implemented so far is a restricted zone surrounding the Seine River for more than seven days prior to the opening ceremony. To gain entry into these areas, individuals must obtain either a Games Pass QR code or possess Olympic accreditation. Some locals and tourists without appropriate credentials have been redirected to alternative crossing points across the river. Additionally, increased police presence has been observed around public transportation hubs.
Despite tight security measures, organisers are mindful of maintaining a sense of celebration for both participants and spectators alike. "We're not willing to compromise on our security measures," Estanguet noted. "Our goal is to implement an unprecedented level of security while still creating an atmosphere that reflects the spirit of Paris."
In preparation for the Games, several international police forces have been dispatched to assist French authorities. Collaboration has been established with approximately 40 countries, demonstrating global support and commitment to ensuring a safe environment during this momentous event.
With over eight million tickets sold thus far, Paris 2024 stands out as one of the most anticipated Olympic Games in recent history. Tickets are still available for public purchase through the official website, with an estimated additional million awaiting eager buyers.
