Tadej Pogacar, representing UAE Emirates in this year's Tour de France, solidified his overall position after a commanding performance by Jonas Vingegaard at Pla d’Adet ski station located within the Hautes Pyrenees region.
The 2024 race witnessed Pogacar, an accomplished two-time winner of the event in previous years (2020 and 2st), swiftly depart from his main rivals under five kilometers to the challenging summit finish. This maneuver widened his lead over Denmark's reigning champion, Jonas Vingegaard, who competes on behalf of Visma Lease-a-Bike team.
The breakaway group reached the final ascent with a slight advantage, but it disintegrated upon confronting the steep inclines. As Ben Healy from EF Education EasyPost gained separation and David Gaudu, affiliated with Groupama-FDJ, retreated to join the main group of riders, Tadej Pogacar's team was at the helm as they approached the foot of the climb. Remco Evenepoel from Soudal Quick-Step Team followed closely in their wake but ultimately did not challenge Vingegaard on the descent.
Despite no early aggressive moves by any key competitors - Pogacar, Vingegaard, or Evenepoel - Tadej Pogacar's teammate, Adam Yates, made a late surge seven kilometers from the finish line without garnering support. However, this proved to be merely a feint as Slovenian representative Jonas Vingegaard launched an unprecedented offensive towards the conclusion of the race. Pogacar managed to create a significant distance between himself and his closest competitors in the final stretch.
Meanwhile, Ineos Grenadiers endured their share of tribulations with Tom Pidcock's absence due to Covid-related symptoms, while Geraint Thomas persevered as he sought to aid team leader Carlos Rodríguez through the challenging Pyrenees terrain. The peloton witnesses a gradual decrease in numbers after key UAE Emirates riders faced setbacks and withdrawals from several teams due to various circumstances including illness, injury, or Covid-19.
