Police capture alleged mastermind behind Colombian senator's shooting

Suspect in Shooting of Colombian Senator Arrested

The suspected organizer behind the attack on a conservative Colombian senator and presidential candidate has been detained nearly a month after the incident, authorities reported.

Elder José Arteaga Hernández, also known as “Chipi” or “Costeño,” was captured in northwestern Bogotá on Saturday, according to national police director Maj Gen Carlos Fernando Triana. Officials had earlier linked him and other suspects to the location where Miguel Uribe Turbay was shot on 7 June.

Uribe was delivering a speech during a political event when he was shot from behind and struck in the head. The alleged shooter, reportedly a minor, was detained while attempting to escape. Three others have also been arrested for their suspected roles in planning and carrying out the attack. Investigators are still determining the motive.

Uribe, who announced his bid for the 2026 presidential race last October, remains hospitalized in critical condition after multiple surgeries. In the senate, he has been a prominent critic of President Gustavo Petro.

The shooting has drawn widespread condemnation in Colombia, a nation historically marked by violence against politicians from armed groups and drug cartels.

Arteaga faces charges including attempted murder, illegal weapons possession, and exploiting minors for criminal acts. Interpol issued a red notice for his arrest just prior to his detention.

It remains unclear whether Arteaga has legal representation to speak on his behalf. Authorities stated he is expected to appear before a judge soon.

Triana previously described Arteaga as having “spent over two decades engaged in criminal activities, including contract killings across Bogotá.”
