Police Begin Arrests at Largest Protest Against Palestine Action Ban
Over 1,000 people pledged to risk arrest at a London protest on Saturday opposing the proscription of Palestine Action, nearly twice as many as at a similar demonstration last month that led to 532 arrests.
Hours before a planned press conference on Tuesday, Tim Crosland, a former government lawyer and co-founder of Defend Our Juries—the group behind the protests—was detained by police along with four other organizers.
Protesters joining Saturday’s demonstration have been advised not to provide personal details to officers, forcing mass processing at police stations. Organizers argue this would make arresting everyone "practically impossible." At last month’s event, the Metropolitan Police said 212 of those detained were taken to stations.
The demonstration coincides with a large march in London led by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and other groups. It also follows growing scrutiny over the DSEI arms fair, the country’s largest defense exhibition, which opens Saturday.
