President Kagame anticipated to secure another term amidst Rwanda's upcoming elections

On Monday, Rwandan citizens cast their ballots in an election where Paul Kagame is anticipated to secure another term as the nation's leader. This upcoming poll represents the fourth since a tragic massacre claimed over 800,000 lives three decades ago.

Kagame, once leading Rwandan Patriotic Front rebels in defeating extremist forces and ending the genocide, assumed presidency through parliamentary decision after Pasteur Bizimungu's resignation in 2000. He has triumphed with over 90% vote share across three prior elections.

Running under RPF's banner, Kagame seeks re-election for a fourth term following the constitutional amendment in 2015 that extended presidential terms. His administration is praised for unifying Rwanda and elevating it as an East African economic hub; however, allegations of rights curtailments persist despite claims to the contrary by critics.

In this election cycle, Kagame competes against former party member Frank Habineza and independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana among other challengers who were disqualified on account of various reasons. Kagame's campaign focuses on security, unity, and economic advancements.

Habineza advocates for tax reforms, land policy changes, and agricultural modernization, while Mpayimana aims to reform the parliamentary system, enhance agriculture productivity, and improve education. Despite their proposals, analysts suggest they may struggle to match Kagame's dominance due to limited recognition, resources, or organizational capabilities.

The RPF has maintained control since 1994, securing a majority in parliament. Scholars note that such conditions likely perpetuate the existing political structure without immediate challengers to Kagame's reign. However, this election provides an opportunity for leaders to address human rights concerns and ensure justice for past atrocities.

Additionally, Rwandans are also voting on Tuesday for parliamentary representatives, with results expected soon after the polls close.
