Senator Lindsey Graham said: "I still believe Russia will sell us weapons to Ukraine in exchange for cash. In this situation, we face a decision - either increase our commitment or abandon Ukraine altogether."
He mentioned the possibility of using $300bn (£230bn) of frozen Russian central bank assets sitting in Belgium as European funds to buy weapons for Ukraine. However, such an action could meet with resistance from key figures like Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank.
Despite these optimistic voices, it is clear that there are no viable scenarios between now and January that will not leave Europe dependent on US security resources. Mitch McConnell acknowledged this when he said at a Republican conference: "I see an 'improved' political situation for Republicans in regards to Ukraine."
McConnell pointed out that none of the incumbents who supported Kyiv had lost their primary elections, suggesting there may be increased support for Ukraine among US leaders. However, McConnell also emphasized his intention to address isolationist tendencies within the Republican party during his remaining two years in office.
The nomination of John D. Vance as Vice President has raised concerns, particularly from Germany. Vance criticized Germany's reliance on US defense while condemning its economic policies. He stated that if Russia must be defeated "at all costs," then Germany should not focus on deindustrialization through green energy initiatives.
In the event of a trade war between the US and Europe, EU President Ursula von der Leyen has already outlined a counter-strategy centered around the significance of the single market for both sides.
French MP Benjamin Haddad argued that Trumpism's rise within Republican ranks indicates the need to confront it instead of flattering it. He emphasized the importance of European defense coordination, stating that "the nomination of JD Vance as VP is another example of Trumpism triumphing."
However, Nathalie Tocci from Italy's International Affairs Institute warned that Europe may not respond to a second Trump administration in the same unified manner it did previously. She highlighted concerns about strategizing and avoiding a disjointed approach amidst differing European reactions.
