President Emmanuel Macron announced that France's current caretaker government would continue to operate until after the Olympic Games conclude on August 11th. This decision aims to prevent any potential chaos during this period, as significant changes in leadership could lead to disorder.
Following recent parliamentary elections where no single party dominated, the left-leaning coalition nominated Lucie Castets, an unfamiliar civil servant, for Prime Minister. Macron confirmed that the existing government would manage affairs during the Olympics and stated there were not sufficient conditions in place to implement alterations before August's midpoint.
Writes of no clear timeline exist regarding when a new prime minister might be named by Macron, who holds his presidential mandate until 2027. However, should the nominee fail to garner majority support among legislators, it could trigger a confidence vote.
Castets' educational background includes graduations from Sciences Po and the London School of Economics, with professional experience in France's treasury general directorate and Tracfin, an anti-money laundering agency. The New Popular Front has commended her leadership in public service advocacy and commitment to combating tax evasion and financial crime.
Green Party representative Marine Tondelier encouraged Macron to acknowledge the election outcomes by appointing Castets as Prime Minister. On the other hand, Sébastien Chenu of the far-right National Rally dismissed the choice of Castets as "a disheartening jest."
