The UK, France, and Algeria convened an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council as pressure mounted on Israel from a US warning stating it would partially halt military assistance unless humanitarim aid was permitted into Gaza without hindrance within 30 days.
The British Foreign Secretary David Lammy highlighted that conditions in northern Gaza were worsening, with minimal food and essential services arriving recently due to ongoing blockades since the beginning of this month as reported by UN agencies warning about people resorting desperately for sustenance amidst severe hunger.
The US has set out clear prerequisites in a letter addressed to Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant and strategic affairs secretary Ron Dermer, citing domestic laws that necessitate lifting of restrictions on humanitarian aid flow into Gaza as per their own regulations for such assistance. They also requested Israel's assurance against using starvation tactics or displacement actions in the region under any circumstances and demanded an agreement to pause military operations temporarily, allowing these essential supplies a clear passage through all four primary entry points controlled by IDF without undue obstruction.
Algeria’s reaction was cautious; their General Staff Officer mentioned that orders for humanitarian aid were conveyed upwards from the chief of staff and didn't necessarily alter daily procedures, which are dictated primarily on strategic considerations rather than political pressure or external demands like those placed by Washington.
Despite previous instances where American interventions had previously led to lifting restrictions in times when diplomatic pressures decreased, Israel has often returned to stringent regulatory measures for aid distribution following such events. Despite this history and the US's request outlined on Wednesday via COGAT (Israel Military Control of Gaza), only around 50 truckloads carrying crucial supplies like food, water, medical essentials, along with shelter materials from Jordan reached northern Gaza through permitted routes - a far cry compared to September’s record-low volume.
The US' letter further indicated concern about proposed Israeli measures that might severely disrupt the operation of UNRWA (Palestinian Relief Organization) and potentially impact thousands in West Bank/East Jerusalem, which could violate pertinent American policies on humanitarian aid restrictions as per their law.
The US has recently imposed a moratorium until March 2025 from funding UnRWA but reassured its intent to restore this support given suitable safeguards are in place following the September incident where Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was assassinated, an event that seemedingly supported Israel's military actions.
In Lebanon contextualizing these demands came amidst concerns from European allies like Italy (Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni opposing Unifil troop withdrawal), while the US has been assisting in bolstering Gaza’s missile defence systems with an advanced Thad system, intending to maintain their own strategic interests of discouraging further Iranian attacks possibly retaliatory towards Israel.
The situation reflects differing stances by Washington that could indicate internal divisions within the administration: endorsement for a temporary halt in Lebanon and opposition from Italy; contrasted with clear demands to expedite humanitarian aid into Gaza while simultaneously threatening sanctions against Iran if further retaliatory attacks were made. It's plausible this tactic could encourage restraint, potentially reducing the risk of escalating conflicts in a region teetering on imminent warfare with implications beyond its immediate neighbours and global powers like Russia or Turkey intervening to mitigate further hostilities; however, it remains unclear whether Israel will heed these demands.
This situation illustrates how the US is providing support at different levels in three distinct conflicts (Israel-Lebanon/Iranian threats), which may send mixed messages within their administration and could potentially escalate further geopolitical complexities, considering a possible Iran strike on Israel as probable.
