A former member of Ukraine's legislative body who advocated for Ukrainian linguistic integrity passed away following a shooting incident in Lviv.
The law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing those responsible for the alleged attack on Iryna Farion, aged 60. Details about her condition were released by Maksym Kozytskyi, the regional governor through Telegram channels. The interior ministry's representative, Ihor Klymenko, previously indicated that authorities are treating this event as an attempt at murder.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has expressed his concerns and is closely monitoring the situation regarding the apprehension of the perpetrator(s). He emphasized a firm stance against any form of violence.
Iryna Farion, who was recognized for her dedication to the Ukrainian language as an academic in linguistics, joined Svoboda party back in 2005 and later became a member of parliament. Her efforts did not result in securing a seat during two more elections after 2012; however, she also contributed on the Lviv regional council.
Her reputation was marked by regular campaigns to support Ukrainian language usage and challenge officials who preferred Russian over the national language. During the conflict involving separatist groups supported by Russia in Eastern Ukraine, Farion made bold statements regarding defenders of Mariupol city.
Ukrainian is the official state language despite a significant portion of its population being bilingual with Russian, which can be traced back to Soviet influence that once suppressed Ukrainian as an official language. Efforts have been ongoing in parliament to make Ukrainian predominant across all public sectors.
