Prolonged conflict escalates with Israeli attack resulting in minimum of 25 casualties at Khan Younas refugee complex.

A strike on a school-turned-refugee site in southern Gaza resulted in at least 25 casualties, according to local officials. The incident unfolded during an intensified military operation that forced thousands of individuals to seek shelter elsewhere.

In the early afternoon hours, Israeli forces targeted temporary accommodations housing families displaced by conflict near a school building situated within Abassan municipality's vicinity in eastern Khan Younis area. An AP journalist who attended Nasser Hospital witnessed and verified 25 deceased individuals. Health officials reported that among the fatalities were at least seven women and children.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a statement mentioning, "A warplane utilizing precision-guided munitions targeted an individual affiliated with Hamas's military arm who was involved in prior violent acts."

The IDF stated they were evaluating reports concerning civilian injuries and that the event underwent investigation. Eyewitnesses to BBC reported a congested area during the strike, estimating around 3,000 people present at the time of impact. Another witness relayed information about no forewarning regarding any imminent attacks in the region.

The recent assault emerged amidst previous evacuations ordered by the IDF within southern Gaza's confines. Despite significant destruction to Khan Younis, many Palestinians returned there to evade another Israeli offensive directed at Rafah city.

Additionally, residents across Gaza experienced an upsurge in aerial bombardments during this week, with reports of helicopter strikes and ensuing confrontations as Israel expanded its ongoing offensive throughout Shuja'iya district.

Hamas representative Ismail Al-Thawabta stated that the recent assaults resulted in 60 casualties within central Gaza areas, with several districts under evacuation orders by the IDF due to heavy bombardment. The Palestinian Red Crescent reported a high volume of urgent humanitarian appeals from Gaza City but could not respond effectively because of the offensive's intensity.

The conflict escalated on Wednesday when Israel announced a soldier fatality caused by combat in central Gaza. Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh criticized the current military engagement as having severe implications for peace negotiations, accusing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of intentionally disrupting talks aimed at achieving a ceasefire agreement.
