Qatar Expresses Interest in Hosting the 2036 Olympics and Paralympics
Qatar has announced its intention to bid for the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The country’s Olympic committee (QOC) stated on Tuesday that it is engaged in ongoing conversations with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding the event’s potential hosting.
Qatar previously held the men’s football World Cup in 2022.
The QOC described the move as a reflection of the country’s dedication to the Olympic and Paralympic Movements and its commitment to contributing to the evolution of international sports.
Holding a Summer Games in Qatar’s intense heat may necessitate a shift from the usual scheduling window. The 2022 World Cup was moved to November and December to avoid the hottest months.
Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, QOC president and head of the bid committee, said, "Approximately 95% of the necessary sports facilities are already in place, with a national strategy ensuring full preparedness.
"This strategy is part of a broader vision focused on creating a sustainable legacy in social, economic, and environmental terms. Our goal extends beyond hosting a successful Games—it is about fostering inclusivity, sustainability, and global cooperation."
Last month, IOC President Kirsty Coventry mentioned that her organization would reassess the selection process for future host cities.
