A rapidly spreading wildfire near Yosemite National Park has placed nearby rural areas at risk, driving residents to seek safety as a severe heatwave grips California and states in the US west coast.
The fire known colloquially as "French fire" ignited on Thursday and expanded beyond 840 acres by Friday. Officials report that containment is at 5% with mandatory evacuations and road closures enforced to ensure public safety, based on statements from local emergency services.
Residents in the town of Mariposa captured video footage showing flames and smoke advancing into the area overnight as temperatures are expected to reach highs surpassing 100°F on Friday. The region is under an extreme heat advisory, marking a concerning increase from earlier predictions.
Several fires have been reported in the state simultaneously with more than one incident occurring during the Fourth of July holiday period. Notably, firefighting efforts against the Thompson blaze near Oroville city in Butte County are showing progress as containment rises to 29%. Residents who previously evacuated have been permitted to return home amidst continued control operations under extreme heat conditions expected to intensify through the weekend.
California's history of wildfinas, particularly those occurring during spring and early summer, can be attributed in part to a wet winter that resulted in abundant vegetation which later became highly flammable with rising temperatures. The current intense heat exacerbates this risk, potentially prolonging an active fire season for the upcoming months.
Concerns were raised regarding Fourth of July activities possibly contributing to heightened wildfire dangers. Ed Fletcher from Cal Fire expressed apprehension over the arid conditions faced by emergency personnel in their efforts against these blazes.
The western region is also experiencing high temperatures, with a National Weather Service alert stating that a "significant and extremely dangerous" heat wave affects much of the area for an extended period into the weekend, impacting more than 134 million people under advisories as forecasts predict excessive heat to persist across California and southern Oregon.
