Polish divers stumbled upon an 1890s shipwreck laden with bottles of champagne and porcelain fragments off Sweden's Baltic coast.
Tomasz Stachura from the diving group Baltictech expressed his astonishment at finding such a "treasure" on their recent expedition, stating that they encountered crates filled not only with sparkling wine but also mineral water. He estimated approximately 100 bottles of champagne within the wreck's cargo hold.
Stachura has been diving for four decades and described this as a unique find due to the substantial amount of goods discovered onboard, considering it his first such experience.
ited by sheer chance while exploring new dive sites out of curiosity. The location is approximately 20 nautools away from Oland Island in Sweden.
By examining intact clay bottles with a stamped brand name, the divers deduced that this vessel capsized mid-19th century due to its resemblance to Selters labels present during that era. They reported their discovery to Swedish authorities but expressed concerns over the extensive procedures required for extracting such historical finds. Stachura suggested allowing it to remain undisturbed while they prepare a proper operation plan, emphasizing the importance of preserving this piece of history for another year before extraction.
