On Tuesday night around 11:30 PM, a group reportedly wielding knives and pipes attacked asylum seekers who had taken refuge in tents on City Quay in Dublin's central area. The incident occurred three hours after these individuals from Somalia and Palestine set up a temporary encampment on the spot.
According to local reports, some of the makeshift shelters were mutilated before being hurled into the River Liffey as those involved fled towards police protection. One individual was distressed upon witnessing their identification papers discarded into the waterway. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in connection with this disturbance.
In response to reports of vandalism, law enforcement officials began an investigation. Integration Minister Roderic O'Gorman condemned such acts against vulnerable groups and assured that efforts would be made by his department to provide safe accommodations for those involved in the incident later on Wednesday.
This unrest occurred amidst heightened tensions surrounding immigration, following a protest at a housing site intended for 500 individuals located in Coolock, north Dublin. The demonstration became contentious when some participants resorted to violence, damaging property and causing confrontations with authorities. At least nineteen individuals faced charges related to public disorder offenses as a consequence of the unrest.
In an attempt to fortify security measures at the housing facility, concrete barriers were installed around the premises earlier that day. The Irish Prime Minister, Simon Harris, denounced these acts and emphasized the rejection of such behaviors under any guise, including protest.
ited with a similar sentiment in remarks made after an incident last November involving arson at another housing facility designated for asylum seekers. This trend has been observed since 2022 across various regions in Ireland. The local elections witnessed numerous candidates running on anti-immigration platforms, with some of them securing elected positions following the recent voting events.
