The Romanian parliament has sanctioned the killing of nearly 500 bears in a bid to manage the species' population amidst rising concerns over safety. This decision follows an incident wherein a hiker lost their life due to bear attack, leading to widespread public disapproval and political action.
Romania harbors Europe's largest brown bear community outside Russia with approximately 8,000 bears in its territories according to government records. In the past two decades, these animals have caused fatalities amongst human residents, totaling 26 deaths and numerous injuries.
The incident involving a young hiker's demise on an esteemed mountain trail prompted Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu to reconvene parliament members for an emergency assembly. The session resulted in the adoption of legislation aimed at regulating bear numbers, along with honoring the deceased youth through a moment of silence.
The enacted law permits the reduction of 481 bears next year, more than double the previous annual culling figures. Despite this, parliamentarians conceded that such measures may not entirely preclude future confrontations between humans and bears.
Environmental advocates have criticized the policy as being ineffective, with experts from organizations like WWF Romania suggesting a shift towards preventative and interventionist strategies to address "problematic" bear behavior.
Romanian authorities reported an escalation of emergency calls regarding bear sightings this year, highlighting community concerns over human-wildlife interactions.
