Rory McIlroy fails to make it into the top half despite battling strong winds at The Open Championship.

Rory McIlroy fell short in his attempt at the Open, attributing "the wind's influence" as a significant factor during his departure from Royal Troon.

Alongside McIlroy, notable athletes like Bryson DeChambeau, Tiger Woods, Cameron Smith, Viktor Hovland, Tommy Fleetwood, 2023 US Open champion Wyndham Clark, and Tyrrell Hatton missed the weekend cut. The qualifying threshold was set at six over par.

McIlroy started his second round with a score of six under in just six holes but struggled to maintain that momentum, finishing with an overall score of 78 on opening day. Despite a more successful back nine later, he couldn't shake off the disappointment from last month's US Open performance, hoping for better spirits at the upcoming Olympics.

"The wind was challenging throughout," McIlroy admitted. "My adaptation to its left-right patterns on the back nine yesterday and facing gusty conditions this afternoon made it quite uncomfortable during a few shots."

Starting six over par early, he continued with difficulty but managed a bogey-free stretch in his final 12 holes. McIlroy acknowledged that wind conditions can be particularly demanding for those not accustomed to them.

Meanwhile, DeChambeau and Hatton also faced challenges at the tournament, while Japan's Aguri Iwasaki surprisingly scored a second-round score of 91, finishing in an unexpected position on the leaderboard.
