Russian attacks on Kyiv leave one dead and ignite fires in Ukrainian capital

Russia conducted an overnight assault on Ukraine using drones and missiles early Monday, leaving at least one dead and sparking fires across the capital, Kyiv, according to officials.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that emergency teams were responding to incidents in several districts. City officials reported damage to a central subway station, commercial buildings, shops, residences, and a kindergarten.

"We regret to confirm one fatality from the attack," said Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, in a Telegram post.

Residents endured another night of unrest, with many seeking refuge in underground stations as explosions echoed through the city. Air defenses worked to intercept the strikes.

Oleh Synehubov, governor of the Kharkiv region, noted several explosions in Ukraine’s second-largest city without immediately specifying the extent of the destruction.

The attacks followed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent statement that Kyiv had suggested new peace negotiations with Moscow.

Previous discussions in Istanbul failed to produce a ceasefire agreement, though prisoner swaps and arrangements to repatriate fallen soldiers were agreed upon.

Earlier this month, the Kremlin expressed willingness to continue dialogue after U.S. President Donald Trump set a 50-day deadline for a peace agreement, warning of sanctions if talks collapsed.

The European Union recently imposed its 18th round of measures against Russia, focusing on banks and further restricting oil export prices to limit funding for the conflict.
