Senior Russian Navy Official Killed Near Ukraine Frontline
A high-ranking Russian naval commander, previously in charge of one of the military's most heavily affected brigades, has died near the Ukrainian frontline, according to official statements from Moscow.
Maj. Gen. Mikhail Gudkov, who oversaw Russia’s marine forces, was reportedly killed on Tuesday in a Ukrainian missile strike on a command post in the Kursk region. Some reports suggest the location may have been compromised due to lapses in operational security.
Oleg Kozhemyako, governor of Russia’s far-eastern Primorsky Krai, stated that Gudkov died “fulfilling his duty as an officer alongside his troops” and emphasized that despite his senior rank, he “still personally visited marine positions.”
Gudkov had been directly promoted by President Vladimir Putin in March after leading the 155th Marine Brigade, a unit that has faced significant losses and repeated reconstruction due to battlefield casualties.
An unverified Russian Telegram channel, MiG 41, claimed that according to unofficial sources, the base’s location may have been exposed either by an informant or intercepted communications after some marines contacted relatives in Vladivostok as the city began festivities for its anniversary.
Local reports indicated that at least four missiles hit the facility near the village of Korenevo, roughly 30 kilometers from the frontline, resulting in the deaths of several other senior officers.
Meanwhile, in Ukraine, officials reported that three civilians were killed and 34 injured in Russian airstrikes across multiple regions on Thursday. Ukraine’s air force stated that Moscow launched 52 Shahed and decoy drones, with 40 successfully intercepted or disrupted.
Recent reports revealed that the U.S. has temporarily halted shipments of Patriot defense missiles and other precision weapons to Ukraine over concerns about dwindling stockpiles. Former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed last month that some of these missiles had been redirected to Israel for defense against Iranian threats.
The Financial Times noted that Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are expected to address the matter in discussions on Friday. Earlier in the week, Zelenskyy stressed that “by any means, we must secure safety for our citizens.”
