Morning Briefing: Ukraine's Path Ahead

At least four people were killed and more than 30 injured in a fresh wave of Russian attacks on Ukraine overnight, coming shortly after a series of calls between U.S. President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The latest assault raises further concerns about Ukraine’s future, as the proposed U.S.-backed ceasefire, championed by Trump, shows little sign of advancing.
In a Telegram update, Zelenskyy’s chief aide, Andriy Yermak, stated, “A key principle of defense is dismantling the enemy’s capacity to produce weapons,” emphasizing the need to “undermine Russia’s military-industrial base through measures ranging from sanctions to targeted strikes.”
The increase in Russian arms production heightens the risk of further conflict beyond Ukraine’s borders, a concern that demands global attention.
Meanwhile, parts of Europe continue to endure extreme weather. Greece faces near 40-degree Celsius temperatures, while central and eastern regions brace for storms and heavy rainfall.
In Strasbourg, the European Parliament will debate ahead of a vote of no confidence in Ursula von der Leyen’s Commission this Thursday.
Updates are also expected on ongoing EU-U.S. trade discussions and the situation on the Polish-German border, where Poland reinstated border controls overnight to curb irregular migration.
