A Russian military court has handed down six-year prison sentences to a playwright, Yevgeniya Berkovich, and theatre director Svetlana Petriychuk for allegedly glorifying terrorism in their work depicting women joining jihadists in Syria. The trial, conducted behind closed doors due to safety concerns raised by witnesses on social media, has sparked controversy among Russia's artistic community amidst a backdrop of increased government control over cultural institutions since the Ukraine conflict began.
The sentencing echoes previous comments from Berkovich regarding her work being aimed at preventing extremism and comes after an arrest in May last year that drew widespread attention. Critics, including human rights organizations like Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, argue that the pair's conviction stems not solely from their art but also as a form of retaliation against Berkovich for her views on Russia's military actions in Ukraine.
Following the announcement by judge during Monday's sentencing, supporters, including Nobel laureate Dmitry Muratov, have rallied behind the two women, demanding their release and calling into question the fairness of their trial. The case has also sparked discussions around freedom of expression in Russia, with Berkovich's husband expressing disbelief at the severity of the sentence for his wife, who he described as "absolutely innocent."
The pair had previously won recognition with their award-winning play, Finist The Brave Falcon. Despite these accolades, their creative output has been scrutinized under increased government oversight since Russia's entry into the Ukraine conflict in 2022.
