Russian attacks in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, resulted in at least three fatalities and nine injuries, according to city officials on Thursday.
“Current reports indicate the death toll has risen to three, with nine wounded. A child was among those killed,” the city’s military administration stated.
Loud explosions were reported in Kyiv early Thursday, with officials describing the assault as large-scale. The blasts lit up the night sky, leaving behind plumes of smoke. At least one missile was intercepted, visible as red tracer fire streaked upward.
Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, confirmed a major assault was underway, with air defense systems active. Residents were advised to stay in shelters.
Witnesses observed around 100 people seeking safety in a subway station, some resting in sleeping bags while others held their pets. Three young people were seen waiting nervously in an underpass as the attacks continued.
Emergency crews responded to incidents in the Darnytsky, Dniprovsky, and Shevchenkivsky districts, where initial assessments indicated damage to several residential structures.
Recent diplomatic efforts to halt the conflict have seen little progress. Despite discussions involving the US president and leaders from Russia and Ukraine, no significant breakthroughs have been achieved. Moscow has avoided direct talks with Kyiv’s leadership while adding conditions to any potential agreement.
