Aryna Sabalenka beat Naomi Osaka 6‑2, 6‑4 to reach the Indian Wells quarter‑finals, and fourth seed Alexander Zverev progressed to the men’s last eight.
Both Sabalenka and Osaka, four‑time Grand Slam champions, met for the first time since 2018, when the Japanese captured the US Open on her way to a maiden major. The world No. 1’s power proved decisive against the former champion.
“It's amazing – we’ve only played once in many years. I think we’ll meet many more times – she’s back playing great tennis,” Sabalenka said in her post‑match interview. “I’m pleased with today’s result, much better than the last time.”
Osaka started strongly, holding her opening service game, but Sabalenka soon found her stride and took advantage of a brief lapse from the Japanese, breaking for 2‑1 after two double faults. The Belarusian then pressed forward with a series of heavy backhands to lead 5‑2 and closed the set comfortably with an ace.
After a few solid holds from both competitors early in the second set, Sabalenka again employed her firepower, breaking for a 4‑2 advantage that proved decisive as she sealed the match without dropping a set.
“I’m glad I could put a lot of pressure on her today and vary my game,” Sabalenka said. “My serve was effective, and my return was strong. I’m satisfied with my performance.”
The previous year’s runner‑up will continue her pursuit of a first title in the California desert against either Canada’s Victoria Mboko or American Amanda Anisimova.
Australia’s Talia Gibson recorded the biggest win of her career, overcoming Italy’s world No. 7 Jasmine Paolini 7‑5, 2‑6, 6‑1 in her first encounter with a top‑10 opponent. The 21‑year‑old, playing her debut WTA 1000 main draw, also became the first qualifier in 11 years to reach the tournament’s quarter‑finals. “I just have confidence in how I’m playing … I’m in shock,” Gibson said.
In the men’s draw, Zverev dispatched Frances Tiafoe 6‑3, 6‑4, converting two of three break points and firing 14 aces to claim his ninth victory over the 21st‑seeded American. He will next meet France’s Arthur Fils as he aims for his first Indian Wells semi‑final.
Fils delivered a striking 6‑3, 7‑6 (9) win over Canadian ninth seed Félix Auger‑Aliassime, saving five set points and rallying from 0‑5 down in the second‑set tiebreak to secure a quarter‑final berth for the second straight year.
