Even off court, tennis champions face challenges. Maintaining focus can be daunting when strained feelings exist. Following Aryna Sabalenka's painful loss to Coco Gauff in the French Open final, a public exchange occurred between the two top players.
The Belarusian star stated the match was "the worst final that I ever played," feeling she lost rather than Gauff won. Sabalenka was more critical, suggesting even four-time Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek should have defeated her. This comment caused considerable tension.
Sabalenka apologised privately. On her Instagram account, she again offered the apology, commenting that such interactions via social media can help people connect. This move was also pragmatic, given both are aiming to win their maiden Wimbledon title this year.
"I did what I did. I get what I deserve," Sabalenka stated, referring to the resulting discussion. "I didn’t want to offend her. I was upset with my performance and my emotions took over. Of course, she has my respect." Gauff confirmed this respect. She stated she understood Sabalenka’s critical speech about her own perceived poor performance during the difficult day. While some offered critiques, Gauff quickly dispelled them, adding she felt Sabalenka's apology was sincere and appreciated. She guaranteed the matter was settled.
Sabalenka, aiming for her first Wimbledon title, expressed a complex feeling towards Gauff. "I would love to face Coco," she revealed. "Hopefully, I will win; then it doesn't matter. But I don’t want to lose definitely, because maybe I will see her again. And that is also possible. But I will try not to lose again, so that I don't have to forgive her once more."
Their spat isn't unique. Harriet Dart, a British player, recently asked an umpire to reportedly ask a fellow player to use deodorant during a match, citing the player's strong scent. The incident attracted significant commentary.
