Salt Lake City will be hosting the 2034 Winter Olympics after receiving formal recognition from the International Olympic Committee on Wednesday. In addition to this, the French Alps was selected as a potential location for the 2030 Winter Games, with conditions pending final approval and confirmation by France's upcoming prime minister.
The city of Salt Lake City in Utah emerged as the sole candidate being considered for hosting the 2034 games amidst challenges like climate change and high costs associated with organizing such events. The state has made a strong case to the Olympics committee, emphasizing its commitment to hosting future Winter Olympic events through a proposed system of rotating host cities.
The bid presentation included Utah's governor and former US ski champion Lindsey Vonn as part of the team presenting their proposal to IOC members. If approved, Salt Lake City will welcome the Olympics 32 years after its last appearance in 2002. The city has preserved most facilities from the previous games for future use, avoiding the need for new construction.
In a similar vein, France's selection of the French Alps as a potential location for the 2030 Winter Olympics also relies on assurances provided by President Emmanuel Macron and commitments from the next prime minister to ensure necessary guarantees are met before final approval can be given.
The IOC approved the bid for France with an 84-4 vote, while seven members abstained from voting. This decision is contingent on a national guarantee signed by the French government after Paris' hosting of the Games in 2024, as well as ratification by the French National Assembly within three months.
The bid for the French Alps focuses on ski resorts and ice sports venues located in coastal city Nice. Despite facing a tight timeframe to prepare for these games just five-and-a-half years ahead of their scheduled opening ceremony, both Salt Lake City's and France's bids acknowledge climate change as an important consideration moving forward.
As the Olympic Committee moves forward with plans for future Winter Games, both locations showcase a determination to adapt and innovate in order to successfully host these events while addressing environmental concerns.
