School tragedy claims twelve lives as classroom structure succumbs in Nigeria

A two-storey educational building in north-central Nigeria collapsed during morning classes on Friday, trapping approximately 120 individuals including students and staff members while initiating an urgent rescue operation for those beneath the debris. Local media reported initial figures of 12 fatalities.

The exact number of casualties resulting from the incident at Saints Academy in Plateau state's Busa Buji area remains unconfirmed by authorities, though reports indicated that some individuals received medical treatment and others were unfortunately deceased, as mentioned by Channels Television based on a witness's statement.

Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency has mobilized rescue teams along with healthcare workers and security forces to the site, acknowledging fatalities among the students.

"Approximately 120 individuals were trapped; however, many have already been evacuated," stated Plateau's Commissioner for Information, Musa Ashoms, in a press release. "In response, governmental directives now require hospitals to administer medical care prioritizing the needs without necessitating documentation or payment."

The state government attributed the tragedy to structural deficiencies of the building and its proximity to a riverbank. It suggested that schools in analogous circumstances consider temporary closure.

Amidst the distressing event, villagers assembled near the site, exhibiting grief and offering support as rescue crews sifted through the remains of the structure. One woman's emotional reactions were captured by onlookers who attempted to restrain her approach toward the wreckage.
