Senior Conservatives Resist Rapid Leadership Contest Announcement by David Cameron and his Allies

British Conservative Party members are urging for a longer leadership contest period, to allow potential candidates time to present themselves. Among those believed to have their names on the list are David Cameron's successor Rishi Sunak, and several prominent figures including Robert Jenrick, Kemi Badenoch, James Cleverly, Suella Braverman, Tom Tugendhat, Priti Patel, and Victoria Atkins.

While some within the party advocate for a swift contest to counter Farage's Reform UK party rise, others argue that allowing candidates more time would enable them to better demonstrate their capabilities on opposition benches before decisions are made at the upcoming Conservative conference. The former chancellor George Osborne has expressed support for this viewpoint and emphasized the importance of testing these new potential leaders through a prolonged contest process, rather than rushing to select one immediately.
