In Gaza City, heavy attacks by Israeli forces have been reported since 7th October, displacing thousands of Palestinians who were already coping with early weeks of a prolonged nine-month war. The recent onslaught occurred in the eastern sector and comes as Israel's coalition parties threatened to halt ceasefire discussions held in Qatar, claiming that discontinuing hostilities now would be an error.
Amidst sporadic militant activities hindering Israeli control efforts within Gaza City - which they claimed authority over months ago – the military is reconsidering its strategy and reallocating forces due to persistent resistance pockets. Before the latest offensive, officials stated that evacuation orders were issued in the targeted region.
Reports from local sources indicate Israeli warplanes have allegedly bombarded a residential complex near Gaza City's industrial junction south of town, resulting in casualties. In another instance, an area south of Gaza City reportedly faced similar tragic circumstances. Witnesses conveyed that many citizens were displaced from the city's southwest toward its northwestern parts and spent a night on streets without shelter.
Sayeda Abdel-Baki, a resident seeking refuge in her relatives' home within Gaza City's Daraj neighborhood, expressed fear of being uprooted amid heavy attacks: “We were forced to flee once again – it’s my fifth displacement.” The al-Ahli Arab Baptist hospital had no choice but to evacuate patients due to the strained resources and capacity at the Indonesian hospital in Gaza's northern region.
A spokespinas IDF statement claimed intelligence indicating Hamas and Islamic Jihad's presence within their territories, including Unrwa headquarters, as reasons for their operations there. However, UNRWA commissioner-general Philippe Lazzarini expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in its facilities.
The possibility of a ceasefire seemed to brighten among Gaza residents when Hamas agreed on part of an American proposal; however, Bezalel Smotrich, Israeli Finance Minister from a pro-settlement party within Netanyahu's governing coalition, argued against halting the conflict.
Criticism is growing in Israel over far-right factions influencing Netanyahu and hindering ceasefire negotiations amid hostage crises. Despite concerns about their influence on decision-making processes due to their position as coalition partners, political analyst Dahlia Scheindlin believes that the current government's choices were influenced by Israel's lack of alternatives at the time given Netanyahu's indictment and subsequent election.
Criticism arose when a document from Netanyahu's office suggested any potential deal must allow for continued hostilities until their objectives are met, which drew criticism from opposition leader Yair Lapid amidst ongoing negotiations crucial to the lives of hostages.
