A severe heatwave across Colorado might have played a significant role in an alarming surge of H5N1 bird flu cases among humans. The outbreak has escalated rapidly, with four individuals testing positive for the disease, while another case is expected to confirm its presence as well. This marks a historical first-time cluster of human bird flu incidents within the United States.
The extreme heat wave potentially interfered with the effectiveness of personal protective equipment (PPE) used by poultry workers during culling operations in Colorado, where H5N1 was detected among infected birds. The state saw its first instance of bird flu affecting a dairy farmer earlier this month.
The hot climate has also been connected to the spread and emergence of deadly diseases like these. Increased temperatures contribute to changes in animal behavior, migration patterns, including those of H5N1-infected wild birds, which can result in new disease outbreaks.
Alexandra Phelan from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health highlighted the significant impact that even small shifts due to climate change could have on systems, sometimes leading to unforeseen consequences.
The workers had a demanding and labor-intensive process of culling an infected flock of egg-laying chickens in Colorado. The extreme heat affected their ability to effectively utilize PPE during the operation, which could have contributed to the transmission of H5N1 among them.
