Shaolin Temple Abbot Under Investigation for Alleged Misconduct
The renowned Shaolin Temple has announced that its abbot is being investigated over accusations of improperly using project funds and temple assets.
According to a statement posted on the temple’s official WeChat account, Shi Yongxin is suspected of committing legal violations and breaching Buddhist principles by reportedly maintaining long-term relationships with several women and fathering at least one child.
Authorities from multiple agencies are conducting a joint investigation, and the results will be disclosed when ready.
Earlier this week, China’s Buddhist Association revoked Shi Yongxin's ordination certificate, stating that his alleged actions had "severely damaged the reputation of the Buddhist community and tarnished the image of monks." Shi has not publicly addressed the allegations. CuriosityNews reached out to him but received no response.
Located in Henan province, the Shaolin Temple is globally recognized not only as a religious site but also for its martial arts tradition, famously depicted in films such as the 1982 classic The Shaolin Temple, starring action star Jet Li.
Past reports from local media have accused Shi Yongxin, originally named Liu Yingcheng, of fathering multiple children and misusing temple funds. However, a 2016 provincial inquiry reportedly cleared him of these allegations, as noted by Caixin Global.
Shi Yongxin joined the Shaolin Temple in 1981 and rose to the position of abbot in 1999, according to the temple’s records.
In 2015, state-run Xinhua News Agency described him as a “CEO monk” due to his efforts in expanding commercial ventures, including kung fu performances and merchandise, which drew public criticism.
Recently, local media debunked an online rumor claiming that Shi Yongxin had been detained while attempting to leave China for the U.S. with several women and about 20 children, dismissing it as false.
