The United States did not provide the United Kingdom with precise operational details or schedules before the coordinated strikes with Israel on Iran, sources have told CuriosityNews.
The American choice to exclude the UK from the formal briefing on the air attacks coincided with Keir Starmer’s refusal to grant the United States permission to employ British military facilities for the mission.
Subsequently, Donald Trump criticised Starmer for denying America access to the bases, claiming the historic partnership had deteriorated and dubbing him “no Churchill”.
The prime minister later authorised the United States to use British installations for defensive operations against Iran aimed at curbing its missile programme, after Tehran retaliated against other Gulf states.
Government officials noted that the UK normally aligns with the United States on defence issues, making it difficult to determine whether it is unusual for Britain to have been left out of the formal advance notice.
A Whitehall source confirmed that the UK was aware that action was imminent through the movement of equipment and intelligence “via the usual channels”, but was not supplied with a heads‑up on the exact timing or operational specifics of the strike.
The United Kingdom decided to evacuate its embassy in Tehran on Friday, indicating it anticipated the attacks – yet it received no details on when they were expected to occur over the weekend.
Trump’s request to utilise British bases for the operation also signalled to the UK that the White House was serious about moving forward, an operation that resulted in the death of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with 47 other military figures.
Starmer defended his stance robustly during prime‑ministerial questions on Wednesday, after Conservative MP Gareth Bacon asked: “The USA is our most important international, strategic ally. Does the PM think his hesitation and ambiguous response to the events in the Middle East this week has strengthened or weakened that relationship?”
Starmer replied that British military deployments had been underway for several weeks, in coordination with the United States, and told MPs that British forces were operating to protect American lives.
“The American aircraft are operating from British bases,” he said. “That is the special relationship in action. British jets are intercepting drones and missiles to safeguard American lives in the Middle East from our joint bases. That is the special relationship in action. Sharing intelligence daily to keep our peoples safe. That is the special relationship in action. Clinging to President Trump’s latest remarks is not the special relationship.”
The British assets deployed included radar installations, ground‑based air‑defence and counter‑drone systems as well as fighter aircraft.
