South Korea's deadly rains displace thousands as casualties rise

Heavy rainfall continued to batter South Korea for a fourth consecutive day on Saturday, leaving almost 3,000 individuals unable to return home as the number of fatalities rose to four.

Forecasts indicate that the downpour will persist in certain regions until Monday, with authorities advising heightened vigilance due to potential landslides and floods. Warnings have been issued across much of the country.

As of Saturday morning, 2,816 people remained displaced, according to government officials, out of more than 7,000 evacuated over the past several days during the severe weather. Four deaths and two disappearances have been reported.

In South Chungcheong province, south of Seoul, the city of Seosan recorded over 500mm of rainfall since Wednesday, marking a historic high.

In other parts of the province, livestock struggled as floodwaters submerged barns and stables.

Reports indicate that more than 641 structures, 388 roads, and 59 farms have sustained flood damage.

The adverse weather is also expected to affect nearby North Korea. Between Sunday and Tuesday, some northern areas may see 150-200mm of rainfall, with isolated regions receiving up to 300mm, as noted by state media.
